Diagnostic accuracy of shear wave elastography in evaluating renal fibrosis in children with chronic kidney disease: a comparative study with nuclear scan

Abstract Background Chronic kidney disease (CKD) is a significant health issue in pediatric patients due to fibrosis progression. Shear wave elastography (SWE) noninvasive technique used assess CKD, but its efficacy needs be better established. This study aimed compare SWE with nuclear scan assessing CKD patients. Aim To determine the area of scarring/fibrosis each using shear chronic and it technetium-99m dimercaptosuccinic acid (DMSA) results. Methods A prospective included 39 who underwent grayscale ultrasound. DMSA scans were performed identify scar areas kidneys. Young modulus was recorded for pole both kidneys compared on DMSA. Thirty-nine age-matched controls estimate average elasticity value normal population. Results this study, 10 females 29 males. The median age 6.5 years. cutoff cortical thickness ≤ 10.2 predicted sensitivity 79% specificity 77%. ≥ 5.57 kPa 87% 96%. Median values significantly higher (12.6 kPa) no (4.1 kPa). mean standard deviation 2.42 0.45 kPa, respectively. Conclusions has revealed that exhibit where scarring occurred, non-scarred areas. Fortunately, integrating into routine ultrasonography assessments straightforward painless process requires additional preparation from patient. Not only method time efficient, also eliminates need potentially risky radiation exposure radionuclide tests future.
